We took a long time to get here since we came from totally different backgrounds and mentalities – we had to learn from each other and start working in the same book before even finding the same page, but all those years were worth it in forming a true partnership. Whether you combine or keep separate finances doesn’t matter nearly so much as if you have a real partner rather than a transactional relationship with that person you might share a bed with.
And that goes quadruple for having a kid together because OMG that’s so much work.

That’s what my husband and I try to do. Granted, buying a house is easier when you have a spouse that has a job vs. self-employed, but we still bought a house well below what the bank offered. If anything were to happen to him or me, I want to know that we’re still okay!

I’ve been able to take big risks with my money without fearing putting my SO in a precarious position because if I eff up, I only have to worry about putting shelter over my head and food in my belly.
When I was in my previous relationship though, it wasn’t at all equal and we broke up because we were not on the same page. I was carrying him financially and let me tell you, I lost respect for him very quickly. Anyways, it couldn’t have lasted so in the end, I wasted a lot of time and money. But I learned my lesson and he’s out of my life for good. So only direction is up. 🙂
