I’m glad this is now a personal choice and less a requirement.

That’s definitely a possibility. It’s different in every single province (which is kind of silly), and most likely why there isn’t a “one stop shop” service to complete the steps.

I think Ontario might have different options, because you don’t *have* to legally change it. You can, or you can “assume” a new name. So for me, my driver’s licence, vehicle registration and health card changed, but my passport and SIN stayed the same. I’ve never had any problems with doing it that way – the only issue is that when booking international travel where I have to use my passport, I just have to remember to book it in my maiden name. But I pretty much never travel internationally (sad) and when I do, it makes me happy because I like my maiden name better anyway (shh).

You go girl! Rant it up. I totally agree with everything you’re saying. That is seriously annoying that they put your husbands last name on your seat. Not cool.
I wish we could assume names here. Boo 🙁

Yeah, definitely wish we had that here.
Nothing gets past you hah! Depends on the organization I’m writing for!

I feel like I recently saw an article you wrote for somebody else (linked in your newsletter) that did have a different last name for you.

But I did have anxieties that people would like I didn’t think we were a strong couple and I was going to bail, or didn’t love him enough but that’s a flaming pile of garbage. Like so many others above people are seriously bothered by it. I was recently at a family wedding and they put my husband’s name as mine on the place card. I was kind of bothered by it but told by multiple people that I shouldn’t be and I should just get over it. But I know that if I were to refer to people by their maiden names on a place card that they would lose it so I can be a little bothered by being referred to by my husband’s name which I never took and told them as much. And having children makes it a tad more complicated as well. I could talk about this forever! Rant alert!!!!!!
My personal opinion is just let people call themselves whatever they want and don’t think too much about it.
Also in Ontario at least you can just assume the name without legally changing it so your birth certificate and SIN number (I believe) would not be changed. Thanks for sharing the guideline. It’s a very complicated process and it’s good that it’s all together now.
